CLICKDr.
Mary Newport, MD, was able to reverse her husband’s Alzheimer’s
symptoms by adding coconut oil to his diet. And it only took two weeks.
Their story was shared across the globe, but sadly, it didn’t last
long.
However, the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease published the study, Coconut Oil Attenuates the Effects of Amyloid-β on Cortical Neurons In Vitro, which
shows that coconut oil may reduce and/or revert cognitive deficits that
neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
disease, and aging.
Memorial University
of Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL, Canada, medical researchers studied the
effects of coconut oil on cortical neurons that were treated with
amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide in vitro. Amyloid-β peptide is the main element
of certain deposits in the brain that are thought to contribute to
Alzheimer’s disease.
It was reported by
the researchers that a remarkable improvement was found in Alzheimer’s
patients that were treated with medium chain triglycerides from coconut
oil in a clinical trial.
The researchers
tested the hypothesis of coconut oil being beneficial to
neurodegenerative conditions by using cell model. They exposed live rat
neurons to numerous combinations of coconut oil and Aβ peptide. It was
found that Aβ peptide was able to reduce the survival of neurons and
the coconut oil was able to protect against this reduction in survival
time.
It was noted that
coconut oil ‘rescued’ Aβ-treated neurons from the mitochondrial damage
that is caused by their toxicity. The oil was able to prevent the
Aβ-induced differences in mitochondrial circularity and size. Patients
with Alzheimer’s disease have a compromised mitochondria function,
meaning these finding are of great importance.
